One of the most renowned European awards is given every year for promotion of cultural relationship between Middle and Eastern European countries and contribution to preservation of European cultural heritage in accordance with peaceful understanding between nations. Among seven laureates of this award - that is annually presented by The University of Vienna - was Croatian literary historian Krešimir Nemec. Some of his great achievements are “The history of Croatian novel”, extensive overview of Croatian novel from the 80s in German language "Der kroatische Roman der achtziger Jahre" and co-editing of “The lexicon of Croatian writers”.
“This is a great recognition of my work and the field of my expertise, but also recognition of Croatia’s efforts to improve understanding in the region in various fields,” said Nemec while thanking for the award last week in Vienna. He added that “this had also been Herder’s thought, who especially favored Slavic nations and considered them a bridge of bonding in future.”
Krešimir Nemec (1953.) is teaching contemporary Croatian literature on The University of Zagreb and by becoming Herderian he joined a circle of distinguished Croatian intellectuals like Miroslav Krleža, Viktor Žmegaè and Nedjeljko Fabrio – to mention just a few – who had already won Herder’s prize.
