Dance of the Bride – the first klezmer musical

Category: Arts & Artists

By: Dora Gyarmathy, Hungarian Radio

The first klezmer musical was produced in the Operetta Theatre in Budapest. The scene of the “Dance of the Bride” is a small settlement in Transylvania where three nations – Romanian, Jewish and Hungarian – live together. The story of the musical is how can we live together, how can we accept the “other”, how can we handle our prejudices and what terrible things happen if we don’t do that.

The lively and beautiful music of the play was composed by Jávori Ferenc Fegya, the leader of the Budapest Klezmer Band, which celebrated its 15th birthday recently.

Gyarmathy Dóra form the Hungarian Radio interviewed the composer.
